Anne Cochrane
My art practice is generally rooted in the natural environment and is fairly recent. Although I have been passionate about textiles and natural fibres most of my life, full-time work as a seed ecologist and research scientist intervened.
Much of my artistic learning has been self-taught, although over the years I have enrolled in textile units at technical school and masterclasses with internationally renowned fibre artists during time off. However, it wasn’t until I retired that I was able to devote myself to being an artist. I mostly work with wool fibre creating 3-dimensional sculptural objects as I am particularly fascinated by the way wool can be moulded in various shapes in the ancient but contemporary craft of felting. However, anything to do with textiles draws me in. I like working with the earthy, muted colours found in the environment but also love bright luscious colours and colour contrasts. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, consider the threats to their ongoing survival and to discover beauty in unusual objects.
