Daz Wood

I’ve always had a love for a fine block of wood. Tree surgeon by trade, Wood by name, wood work, a passion. Turning an old piece of scrap wood into a beautiful bowl is an amazing feeling and great fun. As a kid I always wanted to play with the safe toys, you know, chainsaws, grinders, drills and all those kinds of things. BURLS and fine Rare woods are particularly nice to work with, the grains & colours enough to spur me on.

Some of my early pieces were all about practice but nowadays however it’s how to get the most out of a brilliant colour or grain, reflecting the beauty within the piece. My greatest pleasure is carving tables, stools & bowls. In doing tables & stools, I mainly work with the principles of modern wood work which give me a huge challenge, (and we can all use one of those now & again).

Over the years I’ve been known to take on some very interesting projects, the most recent one, was a Mercedes luxury 13 seater van, to be used for wine tours and transfers around Margaret River. The job was manufacturing and installing jarrah timber in the rear windows and a tear drop mirror with western red cedar used framing for the pampering. Plus a full set of Italian marble laminated, under seat trim, & pewter inlay with walnut burl mini bars (that’s right 2 of ’em)! The step up on another project was creating a consol for a series 3 jaguar out of red gum burl and being commissioned to make perpetual trophies. Jewellery has recently become quite popular with small pieces of burl or Rare desert woods inserted with gemstones and fine pewter critters.
