Di Baker
Di has a printing background and grew up with a love of textiles, captivated by texture, detail, colour and form. She studied printed and woven textiles in the UK, exhibiting and producing commissioned creative fibre wall-hangings, and also freelancing in graphics.
She emigrated to Australia in 2008, where the colours and natural beauty of Western Australia fascinated and inspired her. Moving to Denmark rekindled her love of creating textile art, and she now has her work on sale and display locally and in Perth.
Eco-Printed Silk Scarves. Native flora is arranged on the silk which is then rolled into a tight bundle. The bundles are immersed in the dye-pot, which may also contain a mordant (fixative) such as iron or copper rods. The contact between the vegetation and the silk impresses the beautiful natural pigments and shapes onto the material. Di collects fallen native leaves and bark, as well as plants and prunings, from her garden and is always surprised and thrilled by the subtle colours and designs revealed when the bundles are opened. Each piece is unique.
Nuno Felted Necklets. The nuno felted beads comprise fine merino wool hairs worked through a woven fabric by a process of rolling, rubbing and gentle agitation. The hairs have scales or hooks running along them which lock together forming a strong bond with the fabric and achieving a gathered look. Each bead is an individual creation and the mixture of beads with a variety of found and recycled objects gives every necklet a unique quality.
